5 Things You Need to Change About Your Job Hunt

In order to get the most out of your time spent in the job search, you need to be tactical. You need to get your thought process in the right mode to be able to attack your next job application.

The job search can be rough. Whether it’s the application process that takes forever, rejection emails stacking up, or editing your resume one more time, searching for a job can be grueling for anyone.

In order to get the most out of your time spent in the job search, you need to be tactical. You need to get your thought process in the right mode to be able to attack your next job application.

In order to do this, we’re going to take on five outside-the-box approaches to get you that job.

1. Take a Break

What! What do you mean to take a break? I know it sounds confusing up front but hear me out. Running through job boards day in and day out can take a lot out of you. Most importantly, it drains away that motivation that gives you the extra sparkle to beat out the other candidates. Taking a break will allow your mind to reset and breathe life back into your job search.

2. Stay Proactive & Remain Focused

The easiest thing to do is shut down and watch TV. Don’t fall victim to your own sympathy. Searching for a job is hard! Stay positive and proactive and spend energy on things you can control. Jobs will continuously come up. If one job didn’t fit well, there’s going to be another one. Staying focused on the task at hand will help you find the job you’ve been looking for.

3. Begin Building Your Own Brand

What is your brand? What makes you special? What makes you different from the other candidates? Writing a brand statement that summarizes your experiences and talents will give the focus of your job search. Create an elevator pitch that effectively details why you would be a good hire. Then begin posting your messaging across all job boards that host your resume.

  • Develop a Personal Website

A personal website is not only impressive but also shows you’re driven to projects outside of the scope of your profession. It can act as a one-stop-shop for all of your achievements, links to your social media sites, as well as information you want a potential employer to know about yourself.

  • Begin Blogging

The great thing about blogging is you can focus on precisely what you want the audience to know about. If your field is in technology, then post about relevant info pertaining to tech. Blogging about topical issues will allow you to show off your knowledge of your occupation. This also shows you can form ideas, you’re engaged in the industry, and you’re not afraid to put your ideas to the public.

4. Different Ways to Network

Networking is one of the most effective ways to get a job. There’s no getting around this. To receive a recommendation from someone inside the company you’re applying to can be a significant asset in getting employed. But that doesn’t have to be the only way. Networking can branch out several ways, even when you’re just starting out and don’t know anyone.

Volunteering is a great way to get out and meet new people. It also boosts your resume by showing the employer you’re involved in the community, you have ambition, and that you’re a team player. Volunteering brings in a lot of professionals that are interested in doing good. If you’re in the same mindset, they’ll have no problem setting up a time to have a cup of coffee to share some insights, or better yet, handing their email over to you to send them your resume.

5. Close the Deal

Your first few interviews you’ve gotten, you felt good, everything felt right, and you were certain you got the job. By the end of it, you were practically raising your hands together in joy. Then, as more interviews went on, you started feeling worse about your chances and lost some of the passion you once had. The key here is not getting too high and not getting too low. Walk into your interview with a positive attitude that exudes confidence. Convince them you’re the right person for the job.
